Biography
Any girl who can beat out 32,000 others in an audition must have something going for her. Satomi Ishihara, 20, has certainly achieved a great deal in the five years since she won the 27th Talent Scout Caravan “Pure Girl 2002” grand prix organized by the HoriPro agency.
Born in Tokyo on Christmas Eve 1986, Ishihara played the koto for nine years and thought she might become a teacher one day. “I wasn’t really thinking of showbiz,” she recalls. One day, she heard about HoriPro’s annual audition, which the talent agency holds in 28 locations. Ishihara entered the contest and the rest is history.
When she is filming, Ishihara starts her day before 6am and finishes late at night, which leaves little free time for her hobbies of classical ballet, hip-hop dance and basketball, she laments. “About the only thing I have time for is cooking,” she says. On rare days off, she likes to hang out with friends, go to Disneyland or the movies. She prefers to dress casually when she is out and about, often hiding beneath a cap to ward off unwanted attention. “I don’t mind shaking hands or chatting with fans, though,” she says, citing Shibuya and Daikanyama as her favorite haunts. Asked what her ideal man would be, Ishihara says: “He must be smart, sincere and kind.” Oh, and guys, take note: You better like natto spaghetti because it’s Ishihara’s favorite.[1]

- She wears glasses part of the time.
- Her names convey important meanings. Ishihara means stone field, and Satomi can be translated as beautiful or wise. As for her true names, Ishigami means stone god and Kuniko means country child.
- She says she would like to get better at English and make her mark on the international entertainment scene.
- Besides filming commercials abroad, her only real exposure overseas has been two home stays in Sydney and Saipan.
- To prepare for her role in Nurse Aoi, she exposed her self to what nurses and medical facility staff people do in the hospital: taking blood pressure, operating the X-ray machines and such.
